The house, on Lake Houston, was gorgeous new construction, and the cabinets, throughout the house, were beautifully crafted, of red oak. The client wanted a whitewash look to the cabinets, though, and every attempt by the cabinet maker and painters came out pink, very pink. I used a semi-transparent stain, filtering out a bit of the red oak's busy grain and most of the red.
The end result was a light pearl gray finish, with soft brown grain, reminiscent of old weathered cypress, that worked perfectly with the paint, tile, granite countertops, and the light off the lake.
